A time of joy and positive expectation. Pregnant women undergo many structural and hormonal changes that affect the spine, pelvis, surrounding ligaments and of course the nervous system. Chiropractic care has shown to benefit mothers during these many changes and allow their pregnancy to take place as naturally and pain-free as possible. Chiropractic care is safe for the mother and the unborn child, even well into the third trimester.
The uterus is suspended as it were between the sacrum and the pubis with several ligaments. When the uterus itself is not subject to rotation stress from either the sacrum or the round ligaments, then it will allow for a far more relaxed positioning of the foetus. Addressing the mobility of the sacrum and tension in the 'round' ligaments is seen to improve tension and discomfort for the mother. Also the correction of misalignments at the levels supplying the uterus (lower mid-back from T10 - L1, and the sacral plexus between S2 - S4) often helps to normalise function and bring ease during pregnancy. As the body reorganizes after each adjustment it promotes optimal space for the development of the unborn baby through a symmetrical pelvic position.
We recommend weekly checks during pregnancy when everything appears to be running smoothly. In the event of any concerns then other recommendations will be discussed. It is widely accepted that the more relaxed the autonomic nervous system is (not only during pregnancy) the better the entire pregnancy will run.
It is good to know that there are no known contraindications to chiropractic care during pregnancy and that chiropractic care tables are designed to be suitable for pregnant women, even well into the third trimester.
